He served as the piano teacher of many important composers of the time. Among his students are the following composers: Henri Dutilleux Yvonne Gieseking, née Rimskaya (Walter's second wife) Ludwig Peschka In 1922, after Gieseking's return from abroad, he married Yvonne Rimskaya, the daughter of his former teacher. She continued to be his accompanist after his marriage. In 1931, he was sent to the Nazi Instrumentenmuseum which led to his dismissal. Gieseking took early retirement in 1937 and was shortly replaced at the conservatoire by Emil von Sauer. Gieseking died of a stroke in Hamburg in 1940, aged 57. His compositions were published by Universal Edition in Germany. Works Gieseking's compositions are found in the French chamber repertoire.
